Washington: India's Pallava Bagla has won the American Geophysical Union (AGU) David Perlman Award for Excellence in Science Journalism for his articles on the impact of climate change on Himalayan glaciers.

The Perlman Award of AGU, the largest organisation of earth and space scientists with more than 58,000 members worldwide, recognises work published with deadline pressure of one week or less.


Announcing the award for Bagla, NDTV's science editor, AGU's Perlman Award selection committee applauded "Bagla's articles for addressing "a very serious issue in the earth sciences".

"His articles serve as a reminder to journalists to question sources, to think harder about the agendas and ideas of those people about whom they are reporting, and to stop the steamroller of opinions or ideas when the facts just don't back them up."

"Although Bagla's articles reveal embarrassing foibles of scientists, ultimately they also illustrate science's ability to self-correct," it said.

The first of his two articles "No Sign of Himalayan Melt Down, Indian Report Finds", published in the journal Science, explores dissent among glaciologists regarding the claim by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

that Himalayan glaciers would imminently disappear.

The second article, "Himalayan Glacier Deadline 'Wrong'", published by BBC News, reports on an apparent typographical error in the IPCC claim which appears to explain the panel's controversial, 300-year acceleration of when Himalayan glaciers are expected to vanish.

Bagla is also an author. His latest book is "Destination Moon: India's Quest for Moon, Mars and Beyond". He also freelances stories to BBC and other media outlets, and contributes photographs to Corbis images.

Berlin: Sony has announced a new service called Music Unlimited, through which its electronic products will stream music, converting them into online libraries. The new service joins Sony's already available video-on-demand service called the Qriocity service.

Fujio Nishida, President, Sony Europe said of the new service, "It is a cloud-based digital music streaming service that gives music lovers access to millions of tracks stored and synced with your devices. The service will be going live by the end of the year."


The announcement of Music Unlimited service came at the IFA electronics show, which is the world's largest trade fair for consumer electronics and home appliances.

Although Sony has been trying hard to push its music services and pitting it against Apple time and again, the results have not been to Sony's liking. However, with the Qriocity service, Sony has taken the music and video on the cloud. This a completely different model and a novel approach.

The cloud model allows the music to be sent over the network to several devices including Sony's TVs, Blu-ray players, PS3 game consoles, and Windows PCs. The service will gradually be available on range of portable devices of the future, added Nishida.

Nothing was announced of the cost of the service or the range of the music that will be available in the service. Chris Thielbar, Manager, Product Planning for Sony's network services said that Sony was still negotiating with labels.
San Francisco: In a move to enter the social networking business, Apple has introduced Ping, a service built into iTunes that aims to help users discover new music and, presumably, buy more songs from Apple.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has showcased Ping at Apple's annual music event along with a string of other new products including updates to iPod line of music players and new software that allows wireless printing from iPads and iPhones. With Ping, users will be able to follow friends and see what music they have bought or enjoyed, what concerts they plan to attend and what music they have reviewed. They will also be able to follow bands and get updates on their new releases, concert tours and other events.


Three new iPods were announced, an iPod Shuffle that ditches the previous no-button style in returning to a more classic look, a smaller iPod Nano that now has a touch screen but can no longer play video, and a thinner iPod Touch that has most of the features first introduced on the iPhone 4. The new iPods will be available next week.








Bangalore: Scientists at Hewlett- Packard and Rice University are reporting that they can overcome a fundamental barrier of computer memory that has been the basis for the consumer electronics revolution.
HP might enter into a commercial partnership with a major semiconductor company to produce a related technology that also has the potential to push computer data storage to astronomical densities in the next decade.


HP and the Rice scientists are making what are called memristors, or memory resistors, switches that retain information without a source of power.

In one of the two new developments, researchers at Rice University in Houston are reporting in Nano Letters, a journal of the American Chemical Society, that they have succeeded in building reliable small digital switches an essential part of computer memory that could shrink to a significantly smaller scale than is possible using conventional methods.

The advance is based on silicon oxide, a building block of the current chip industry, thus easing a move toward commercialization. The scientists said that PrivaTran, a Texas start-up company, had used the technique to make experimental chips that could store and retrieve information.

These chips store only 1,000 bits of data, but if the new technology fulfills the promise envisioned by its inventors, single chips that store as much as the highest capacity current disk drives could be possible in five years. The new method involves filaments as thin as five nanometers five billionths of a meter in width. That is thinner than what the industry hopes to achieve by the end of the decade using standard techniques. The initial discovery was made by Jun Yao, a graduate researcher at Rice.

IBM, Intel and other companies are already pursuing a competing technology called phase-change memory, which uses heat to transform a glassy material from an amorphous state to a crystalline one and back. Phase-change memory has been the most promising technology for so-called flash chips, which retain information after power, is switched off.

New Delhi: Making certain amendments to the licence terms, the government Wednesday allocated airwaves to private telecom operators like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone and Idea Cellular to roll out the third generation (3G) mobile and broadband services in the country.

The operators have been allocated 3G spectrum in each circle they won in the auction that fetched the government over Rs.67,000 crore. As many as seven operators had successfully bid for the spectrum in the auction in May.


Under the amended licence terms, the service providers are authorized to use the spectrum for a period of 20 years from the date allocation.

The amended licence conditions allow an operator to offer 3G services to its subscribers till the validity of the spectrum even if its telecom licence expires before that.

Under the roll-out obligations, the government has asked the operators to cover at least 90 percent of the service areas in the metros within five years.

In case an operator fails to carry out the roll-out obligation, it shall be given an extension of one year by making a payment of 2.5 percent of the successful bid amount per quarter. However, even after that if the service provider fails, the spectrum will be withdrawn.

Also, in case of a merger of two or more companies, only one slot of spectrum will be retained and they will have to surrender the remaining 3G spectrum blocks in that service area.

Public sector BSNL and MTNL, which were allotted 3G spectrum in advance on the condition that they would pay whatever was the highest bid amount, have launched the service in Delhi, Mumbai and 463 other cities and towns. 

New Delhi: India will not compromise on its security and all telecommunication data-related companies will have to comply with its demands, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Wednesday.

Presenting his ministry's monthly report on security, Chidambaram said all companies who have come under the scanner of security agencies, including Research in Motion (RIM), Skype and Google, will have to find ways of providing access within 60 days.


"Discussion on technical solutions for further access are continuing and the matter will be reviewed within 60 days," said Chidambaram, who was accompanied by Home Secretary G.K. Pillai.

At a talk organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry Tuesday evening, Chidambaram had said: "Our stand is firm. We look forward to get access to data. There is no uncertainty over it."

India has asked companies that allow users to make voice calls over the Internet and RIM to provide security agencies access to their encrypted data.

"I do not want to go into details as the talks are still going on. But all the companies, which are providing communication services in India, will have to provide lawful access to (their telecommunication) data (to security agencies)," said Pillai, on being asked if notices have been sent to the likes of Google to allow access.

"They have to install servers in the country. The key word is lawful access and they will not be required to install server in India if they are able to provide access to their data without installing it."

The services offered by the likes of Skype and Google convert audio in a digital format that is later transmitted over the Internet. So a Skype user can make a call using a regular Internet connection to another computer, or a regular landline and mobile phone.

Though such calls are not allowed within the country, it is possible to do so for international calls. Security agencies have a problem with such calls as they are not able to monitor the encrypted content.

The government had extended the deadline for RIM to comply with its demands Monday by 60 days and said it will examine the efficacy of the technical solutions given by the smart phone maker in accessing its popular BlackBerry email service and messaging services.

The Department of Telecommunications has also been asked to provide a report on the feasibility of services provided through a server located in India within two months.

Bangalore: The number of internet users in India is likely to touch 237 million by 2015, which currently stands at 81 million, said a report by Boston Consulting Group. Although only 1 percent of mobile phone users are using the internet now, many Indians will first go online from a phone, the report further states.

According to Arvind Subramanian, Managing Director, BCG Mumbai, India is going to be different than what we have seen in mature markets but also in emerging markets. It’s going to be predominantly a mobile experience.


Indians are more interested in services that enhance personal productivity like job alerts or continuing education, said Subramanian. According to the research, about 73 percent of people who go online in India spend time job hunting.  
Bangalore: Semiconductor revenue in 2010 on worldwide to see a 31.5 percent increase from 2009. In 2009 the revenue was $228 billion and it is expected to reach $300 billion by year end. In 2011 it is expected to reach $314 billion, a 4.6 percent increase from 2010.

"Semiconductor growth in the first half of 2010 was very strong but it is becoming increasingly clear that the industry cannot maintain the momentum in the second half of 2010 and into 2011," said Bryan Lewis, Research Vice President at Gartner. "While the impact of the European credit crisis has subsided, the global economic recovery is slowing and there is concern that electronic equipment vendors are adopting a cautious stance, ready to cut production at the first signs of slowing customer orders."


The projected 2010 revenue for the semiconductor industry has increased from Gartner's forecast in the second quarter of 2010, when it expected worldwide semiconductor sales to grow 27.1 percent in 2010.
The PC supply chain is showing the most evidence of a correction, as can be seen by recent company announcements, including Intel's lowering its third quarter guidance. The outlook for the mobile phone market has been steadily improving throughout 2010.

Smartphones continue to drive the mobile phone semiconductor market, representing 18 percent of units and 36 percent of overall 2010 mobile phone semiconductor revenue. These percentages increase to 41 percent of units and 64 percent of mobile phone semiconductor revenue by 2014 as entry-level smartphones trigger a second wave of growth in the market. A dramatic rise in DRAM revenue growth also is set to peak in 2010.
NEW DELHI: After mobile phone maker BlackBerry, the government will issue notices to search engine Google, internet phone call provider Skype, service provider Virtual Private Network (VPN) and a few other entities to make available their services to law enforcement agencies.

The notices to these entities will be issued beginning tomorrow and all of them will be asked to comply with the directive or else they will have to close down their networks in India, a senior official said today.


"There will be no discrimination. All networks operating in India will have to give access to their services to law enforcement agencies," the official said.

The development comes after the government had given a similar notice to Research In Motion, the makers of BlackBerry mobile phones, to allow interception of all types communications using the device.

The Union Home Ministry has discussed the security concerns related to voice and messaging services on the Internet offered by Google and Skype in India, both of which have considerable presence in the country.

The data travelling through Google, Skype, VPN and a few other networks is not accessible by security agencies in the country.

Google is a popular search engine which also offers email, online chatting and owns social networking website Orkut.

Luxembourg-based Skype SA provides telephony services over the Internet on personal computers and mobile phones also uses proprietary encryption and decryption.

VPN is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network.

The operators who had bagged 3G spectrum in the auction in May were Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, RCom, Tatas, Idea Cellular, Aircel and S Tel. These operators fetched the government over Rs.51,000 crore apart from about Rs.16,000 crore from the two telecom PSUs - BSNL and MTNL.

In view of their obligation to procure equipments through cumbersome process of inviting tenders, BSNL and MTNL were awarded spectrum more than a year ago. The operators have been awarded 5 Mhz of spectrum in each circle they won in the auction.

Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance Communication had emerged as the winners in Delhi and Mumbai. On the other hand, no operator could bag pan-India spectrum in the auction that was conducted between April 9 and May 18 this year.

The government had auctioned three 3G slots throughout the nation, while four slots were offered in five circles.

New York: Software major Microsoft is looking for a Chinese partner to become a major player in China's Internet-search market.

Attributing to Microsoft CEO for greater China, Simon Leung, the 'Wall Street Journal' reported that the company plans to invest $100 million in Chinese companies, on top of the $40 million the software maker has invested since 2006.

Microsoft will target companies in sectors including software; cloud computing, in which data are managed and accessed over the Internet; and possibly gaming. However, Leung, declined to elaborate on the timing of the investment, the report noted.

Microsoft also is seeking approval from the Chinese government to sell its Xbox videogame console in China. Leung declined to name any possible joint-venture partner for search market.

Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy (8 July 1949 – 2 September 2009), popularly known as YSR, was the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. He represented the Indian National Congress party. He was elected to the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Lok Sabha from the Kadapa constituency for four terms and to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for five terms from the Pulivendula constituency. He also holds the record of not losing any election throughout his political career. In 2003 he undertook a three-month-long paadayaatra, or walking tour, across several districts in Andhra Pradesh.

He led his party to victory in the next general and assembly elections held in 2004. On 2 September 2009, a helicopter carrying Reddy went missing in the Nallamala forest area. On the morning of 3 September 2009, media agencies reported that the helicopter had been found crashed on top of Rudrakonda Hill, 40 nautical miles from Kurnool. This was later confirmed by the Prime Minister’s office and all five people aboard were pronounced dead at the scene.
Early life
Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy was born at Jammalamadugu Mission Hospital near Pulivendula, Andhra Pradesh. to Y. S. Raja Reddy and Jayamma in a Christian family. His father Raja Reddy was converted from Hinduism to Christianity. His schooling was in Bellary, where his father was a contractor for irrigation canal projects. He graduated with a degree in medical science from Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College (MRMC), Gulbarga University, Karnataka and completed his House Surgeonship at S.V. Medical College, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. He was the elected leader of the House Surgeon’s Association at S.V. Medical College, Tirupati.
Personal life and religious beliefs
Reddy was married to Vijaya Lakshmi.They have a son, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, a politician, and a daughter, Sharmila. His younger brother Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy is also an INC politician.Reddy’s parents were devout Christians andhe was buried according to Christian rites. He had also visited Bethlehem and other holy Christian cities in Israel twice. Although Reddy was a third generation Christian, he is described as an “ardent devotee”of the Hindu deity Venkateswara. He regularly visited the central temple of the god at Tirupati. But, his government was also entangled in many controversies involving the affairs of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, which included practicing of evangelism in Tirumala. Following these allegations, he ordered a ban on evangelism and Christian missionary activities inAndhra Pradesh’s Hindu shrines.
Career
Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy practiced medicine for sometime in his native Kadapa District. The hospital his father built for him at Pulivendula is still running. His family also built and ran a degree collegeand a polytechnic college at Pulivendula which was later handed overto the Loyola Group of Educational Institutions. Another junior college at Simhadripuram, a small town in the vicinity of Pulivendula, is run by his family.
Political career
In 1978 he contested from pulivendula on Reddy-Congress Party and won the elections, Later he joined in Indira Congress.From 1980 to 1983 he was a minister holding important portfolios related to Rural Development, Medical Health and Education under T.Anjaiah Cabinet. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kadapa constituency four times and was elected to the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly six times from Pulivendula constituency. Reddy was the leader of the opposition in the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly for five years. As an MLA he was influential in obtaining water from the Tungabhadra River for the Pulivendula Branch Canal (PBC) and fought for projects like RTPP (Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant) at Muddanur and Proddatur Milk Foods and its ancillaries.
Paadayaatra
During mid-summer of 2003, he led a 1400 km long paadayaatra (journey on foot), covering some of the backward areas in the state to understand the ground realities and living conditions of the people there and gave life to the Congress Party in Andhra Pradesh. As a novice in the legislature, Reddy rallied all the Congress MLAs from the Rayalaseema region and led an indefinite hunger strike demanding solution to the water crisis. He also led a paadayaatra from Lepakshi to Pothireddipadu in Kurnool district. This paadayaatra lead the congress party to a land slide victory in the assembly elections in 2004 when he won 186 seats in the state assembly.
As Chief Minister
He was elected as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh by the Legislature party of the Indian National Congress after they later won 185 seats of the Legislative Assembly in the May 2004 elections.* He has initiated a variety of programs that influence the Economy of Andhra Pradesh and for the benefit of the common people and farming community. Prominent among them are:
JalaYagnam – A large-scale program to construct more than 70 pending irrigation projects in the state to improve irrigation facilitiesto the farmers, with a targeted irrigation to 1.2 Crore acres of land.
Free power supply for farmers for 7 hours a day.
Rajiv Arogya Shree – A health insurance and emergency services scheme for rural masses where the government pays the entire price of any surgery up to 200,000 rupee and does not require people to pay any premium
Pavala Vaddi — a program that provides loans to people at 3% per year so as to encourage them to take up small scale businesses and entrepreneurship primarily targeted at rural women
Indiramma illu — a program for construction of houses for the rural masses by charging a small amount and the government the remaining amount Rs 2/KG of rice scheme

Reimbursement of full college fees for backward sections, reservations for minorities
Apart from these schemes, his government stood as the role model in implementing the central governments flagship program – the NREGA. The main thrust of his tenure was on social welfare with a majority of his schemes targeting at improving the lively hoodof the rural masses. The BBC has called him a champion of social welfare schemes. His tenure also saw significant weakening of the violent extremist left-wing Naxalite movement that was rampant in the state when he assumed office in 2004. The movement was so intense that the former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu’s car was blasted by them in October 2003. A major reason for the weakening for the Naxalite movement is the emphasis given by Reddy’s government improving the livelihood of rural masses, which resulted rural youth not showing interest in joining the Naxalite movement.
Election 2009
Reddy’s major campaign slogan for the 2009 election was “Development and the credibility”. He was seeking a mandate on his performance in his previous tenure. He did not promise any new schemes before the election and only promised continuation and minor extensionsto the on going schemes. The opposition parties had formed a ‘Grand alliance’ comprising of the major opposition party – the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the communist parties. The TDP had promised numerous freebies including free color televisions. There was also a new party floated by a popular film star called Chiranjeevi called Praja Rajyam Party.
In the elections, Reddy’s party (INC) surpassed the required majority in the assembly (148 seats) by winning 156 seats. It has also bagged 33 seats in parliament out of 42 seats. This was seen as a very big victory for Reddy sincehe was able to come to power for the second consecutive term against the odds of anti-incumbency and an almost unified opposition. He became theCongress party’s first chief minister since 1969, that is, in four decades, to be able to seek votes in his own name, and win.
Reddy was sworn in as the chief minister for the term of 2009–2014 on 20 May 2009. The ceremony was held in Hyderabad’s Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium and attended by a crowd of around 20,000 people.

Controversies
Opposition parties allege corruption in the implementation of Reddy’s programs as well as in various other actions of both Reddy and his family. Telugu Desam Party leader N. Chandrababu Naidu alleges that Reddy and his family amassed wealth. The surrender of more than 1600 acres by Reddy to the government in December 2006 was also criticized by the opposition parties who demanded resignation from his post. Naidu also called for Reddy’s resignation after a 2007 Khammam police shooting resulted in eight deaths.
Death
Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s Bell 430 helicopter went missing on Wednesday, 2 September 2009 at 9:35 am. Begumpet and Shamshabad Air Traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft at 9:02 am while it was passing through the dense Nallamala forest area. The Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, P. Ramakanth Reddy, said that inclement weather had forced the helicopter off-course. Although the sparsely populated forest area is considered to be stronghold of the outlawed Naxal communist insurgents, the National Security Advisor of India ruled out the possibility of the Naxals bringing down the helicopter.
The state government of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of India launched one of the largest search and rescue operations in the history of the country. The state’s security officials mentioned that bad weather was hindering the search and rescue efforts.] The Home Ministry of India dispatched 5000 CRPF soldiers for the operation while the Defence Ministry of India ordered the Indian Air Force to comb the area using low altitude planes and the Sukhoi-30MKI equipped with thermal imaging systems.In addition, police personnel from six districts were involved in the ground search. Andhra Pradesh’s anti-Naxal forces were also deployed in the area, owing to their familiarity with the jungle terrain there. Local tribal residents from this part of the state assisted with the search mission. Patrol parties also combed the Krishna river for the remains of the helicopter. ISRO’s RISAT-2 satellite was also deployed to search the area, but the 41 high-resolution images of the area were unable to trace the helicopter.
The wreckage of the helicopter was finally spotted by an IAF Mi-8 helicopter at 0820h within less than 24 hours after contact was lost with Reddy’s Bell 430 helicopter. The Indian Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the helicopter’s crash on the morning of 3 September and the death of all aboard, including Reddy, his special secretary P. Subrahmanyam, chief security officer A. S. C. Wesley, Group Captain S. K. Bhatia and Captain M. S. Reddy.The Director General of Police said that the bodies of Reddy and others were charred beyond recognition and had to be identified on the basis of clothing. The autopsy of all the bodies was carried out at Kurnool Medical College.
Reddy’s body was buried on 4 September at Idupulapai in Kadapa district with full state honors in accordance with Christian rites.
