India to loosen divorce laws as society changes

NEW DELHI — Marriage is the central focus of most Indian lives, but the government on Thursday took steps to make divorce easier as nuptial breakdown becomes more common.
Traditional Indian marriages are still arranged by parents along lines of caste, religion and wealth -- and the couple are expected to stay together and produce children even if they find themselves unsuited.
However divorce rates have risen in recent years as the country has undergone rapid economic development, massive migration to cities and an upheaval of established social norms.
Ambika Soni, the minister of information and broadcasting, told reporters the proposed change in the law would help an estranged partner get a divorce "if any party does not come to court or willfully avoids the court".
Currently divorce in India can be granted for matrimonial fault, mutual consent or if one partner has not been heard of for several years.
The Supreme Court last year said the legal system should try to keep marriages together but agreed that divorces should not be withheld from couples who had completely split.
The proposed amendment, which was passed by a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will include "irretrievable breakdown of marriage" as a legal justification for divorce for the first time.
"In today's day and age it may be a welcome step but it will only really help urban women," Kamini Jaiswal, a Supreme Court advocate, told AFP. "Rural women will still get a raw deal as they are more oppressed by their husbands."
"Divorce is definitely more socially acceptable in urban India," she said. "I have seen a rapid rise in divorces, but in order to obtain a divorce it can take anywhere from six months to 20 years."
Official figures are unavailable but many experts use the figure of 11 Indian marriages in every 1,000 ending in divorce. The rate in the United States is about 400 in every 1,000.
Indian weddings themselves are normally celebrated in lavish style and often involve days of rituals and hundreds of guests.

Europe, short covering lift Sensex 264 points up (Roundup)

A benchmark index for Indian equities Thursday ended 264 points higher on short covering and positive European markets.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 16,668.91 points, closed at 16,922.08 points, 264.19 points or 1.59 percent up from its previous close at 16,657.89 points.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty closed at 5,078.6 points, up 1.57 percent from its previous close at 5,000.3 points.
Broader market indices were also in the positive terrain, with the BSE midcap index ending 1.1 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index 1.26 percent up.
All the 13 sectoral indices on the BSE were in the green.
Auto, metals, realty and telecom stocks saw more buying than others.
Of the 30 scrips on the Sensex, all but one ended in the green. Major gainers included Reliance Infra, up 5 percent at Rs.1,122.85; Bharti Airtel, up 4.81 percent at Rs.285.25, Tata Motors, up 4.31 percent at Rs.759.45, and Hero Honda, up 4.14 percent at Rs.2,006.45.
The only loser was ONGC, down 0.29 percent at Rs.1,188.10.
The market breadth was positive with 1,878 stocks advancing, 901 scrips declining and 135 remaining unchanged.
In other major Asian markets, the Japanese Nikkei ended higher at 9,542.65 points, up 1.1 percent after China reported robust export numbers, raising hopes that the Euro zone debt crisis would not derail the global economic recovery.
The South Korean Kospi too closed higher at 1,651.7 points, up 0.27 percent.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed almost unchanged at 19,632.7 points, while the Shanghai composite index ended 0.82 percent lower at 2,562.58 points.
European markets, which opened weak, made up for their losses as trading progressed. European stocks climbed on the hope that the European Central Bank will leave the benchmark rate at a record low of 1 percent and as economic reports from China to Australia surpassed analysts' forecasts.
UK's benchmark index, the FTSE 100 was ruling 0.26 percent higher at 5,099.11 points.
The German DAX was ruling 0.55 percent up at 6,017.84 points, while the French CAC 40 was also ruling in the positive at 3,481.37 points, up 1 percent.

Verizon Strives to Close iPhone Gap

When Steve Jobs wrapped up his announcement of the new iPhone 4, another big Apple Inc. event had come and gone with no mention of Verizon Wireless.

That was a disappointment for some smartphone customers. Verizon Wireless executives, too, are eager to get their hands on the phone and speak regularly with their counterparts at Apple.
But the country's largest wireless carrier by subscribers is also working hard on Plan B. By loosening its grip over operations and deepening its relationships with allies such as software giant Google Inc. and handset makers HTC Corp. and Motorola Inc., Verizon Wireless is finally making progress in the smartphone race.
Since announcing a deal last October to develop phones with Google, the carrier has introduced two hit Google-based devices—the Motorola Droid and the Droid Incredible by HTC—and its share of the U.S. smartphone market has risen about a percentage point, to 24.1% at the end of March, while AT&T's fell nearly four points to 41.9%, according to comScore, which measured users over 13 years old.
While AT&T Inc. remains the exclusive iPhone carrier in the U.S., Verizon Wireless is working with Google to develop a tablet computer, and other Android smartphones are slated for release this year. Verizon Chief Financial Officer John Killian told a group of investors on May 18 that, "We are going to do as well as if we had the iPhone."
Backing up that statement will take more work. When Verizon Wireless passed on the chance to carry the iPhone four years ago, it fell far behind AT&T in sales of smartphones and data services—the mobile Web browsing, messaging and wireless application downloads that are fast replacing phone calls as the driver of wireless revenue.
More Verizon Wireless customers are buying smartphones, but just 16% of its customers over 13 currently carry them, compared with 33% of AT&T's, according to comScore. AT&T also collected 18% more a month in data revenue per customer than Verizon last quarter.
Adding to the pressure, AT&T Monday changed its data pricing, instituting usage limits for new customers but lowering the minimum smartphone service plan to $55 a month, compared with Verizon's $70 a month.
Verizon Wireless Chief Executive Lowell McAdam said in a recent interview that senior executives at his company talk at least once a quarter with their counterparts at Apple.
Apple appears to be developing a version of the iPhone that could work on Verizon Wireless's network, people briefed on the matter said this spring, and analysts think the carrier could get the phone next year.
"There are a lot of interesting things we can do together," Mr. McAdam said of Apple, "and I am confident that eventually we will."
Until then, the relationship with Google and some key manufacturers gives Verizon Wireless a hedge against the iPhone. And it serves the company's goal of not being too dependent on one device.
More than any other carrier, Verizon Wireless has helped fuel the adoption of Android, using its marketing muscle, customer service expertise, and 2,300 retail stores to propel Google's wireless software. This year, Verizon has become the largest U.S. seller of Android-based smart phones, according to analysts at Credit Suisse.
The pairing of Verizon Wireless and Google, the main competitors to AT&T and Apple, respectively, seems obvious today, but it began with a degree of suspicion.
After missing out on the iPhone, Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, realized it had to go further in opening up its tightly managed system to devices and applications developed by others in order to compete.
"We had been incredibly controlling of the network," said John Stratton, the carrier's chief marketing officer. "We knew that it would slow down innovation."

Meanwhile Google, which until recently was pushing a new model for selling phones directly over the Web rather than through carriers, shared Silicon Valley's skepticism about big phone companies.
In early 2008, when Mr. McAdam visited Google's Mountain, View, Calif., headquarters and told CEO Eric Schmidt that he was ready to let rival companies develop handsets and software on his network, Mr. Schmidt replied, "Yeah, right."
After Verizon Wireless hosted a big conference to help develop those devices, Mr. McAdam recalled, "[Eric] called me up and said, 'You guys were telling the truth; let's sit down and talk.'"
The companies bonded in 2009 while putting together the Motorola Droid, the first Android phone to sell one million units. Since the middle of last year, Verizon Wireless executives have visited the Google campus every three months for high-level planning sessions.
Mr. McAdam, along with Chief Marketing Officer Mr. Stratton and Senior Vice President John Harrobin often meet with Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, Android chief Andy Rubin, and other Google executives such as vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra.
The two teams review the latest Android operating systems and match software up with handsets. "We talk about the experience we want," said Mr. McAdam. "We literally call it the GX, or the Google experience."
This spring, after a group meeting where the team discussed multiple devices, Verizon Senior Vide President John Harrobin sent Google engineers a case of highly caffeinated Red Bull as a bit of liquid encouragement. "I wanted them to have a little extra energy for work," Mr. Harrobin said.
Google seems to have come around to the benefits of the carrier system. In April, Verizon Wireless decided to not offer Google's Nexus One phone on its network. The following month, Google pulled the plug on its experiment with retailing phones over the Web amid poor sales and complaints about shoddy customer service.
"The carrier model is an established model," Google Android chief Andy Rubin said in an interview. "Consumers can walk in off the street and put their hands on a device and feel it. When you're choosing among three devices, it's best to use them side by side, and that's something you can't do on the Web."

Three joins the iPhone 4 launch party

Three is the latest operator to add the iPhone 4 to its line-up, meaning that all of the UK's major mobile networks will now offer the device.
The operator confirmed the move in a short statement almost identical to that released by T-Mobile on 8 June
.
However, Three added that it will stock the phone from the 24 June launch date, a detail omitted in T-Mobile's announcement. The company also confirmed that customers can pre-order the iPhone 4 from 15 June.
While none of the networks has announced tariff details, O2 has made the first move by offering an upgrade option. Customers can cancel their existing contract by paying a one-off charge equal to £20 for each full month remaining.
It is expected that potential customers will be flooded with enticing deals closer to the 24 June UK and US launch date, as the major operators compete to gain the upper hand in an increasingly crowded market.
The iPhone 4 was unveiled by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs at the Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, and features a new touch-screen display, improved battery life and an HD-ready camera.
Analysts have reacted well to the new model.

AT&T Security Hole Exposed IPad E-Mail Addresses (Update1)

June 10 (Bloomberg) -- A security breach in AT&T Inc.’s wireless network exposed the e-mail addresses of some owners of Apple Inc.’s iPad 3G.
AT&T, the second-largest U.S. mobile phone provider, corrected the flaw, the company said yesterday in an e-mailed statement. The New York Times Co. told its staff to shut off iPad wireless access after learning of a breach involving AT&T, according to a memo confirmed yesterday by the New York Times.
A group called Goatse Security said it found a breach that let it uncover information based on a unique code on iPad SIM cards. It then released addresses of iPad owners, including New York Times Co. Chief Executive Officer Janet Robinson and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, to Gawker Media’s Valleywag.
“This issue was escalated to the highest levels of the company and was corrected by Tuesday, and we have essentially turned off the feature that provided the e-mail addresses,” Dallas-based AT&T said in the statement. AT&T declined to comment further, spokesman Fletcher Cook said in an e-mail.
The vulnerability adds to Apple’s chagrin two months after an unreleased prototype of the iPhone, lost by an Apple engineer, was disassembled and photographed by Gawker’s technology blog Gizmodo.com.
“This breach is obviously embarrassing for AT&T and for Apple, but knowing the names of the people who bought the first iPads is more intriguing than dangerous,” Joris Evers, a spokesman for security-software maker McAfee Inc., said in an interview from Santa Clara, California.
2 Million IPads
Apple has sold more than 2 million iPads since releasing the device in April. Some models of the iPad tablet work with AT&T’s third-generation wireless network, and other versions only work on Wi-Fi networks. Apple doesn’t say how many of each model it has sold.
AT&T said it continues to investigate and found no evidence that any other customer data was revealed.
AT&T rose 43 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $25.33 at 9:35 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The stock had declined 11 percent this year before today.
Apple representatives Steve Dowling and Natalie Kerris didn’t respond to requests for comment.

I Quit Drinking

This particular joke won an award for the best joke competition Organized in Britain:

A man walks into a bar in London and ordered 3-glasses of beer and sits in the backyard of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn.

When he finishes, he comes back to the bar counter and orders 3 more. The bartender asks him, “You know, beer goes flat after I fill it in the glass; it would taste better if you buy one at a time.” The man replies, “Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is in Dubai, the other in Canada and I’m here in London. When they left home, we promised that we’ll drink this way to remember the days when we drank together.”

Reverse brain-drain - West no more a greener pasture?

Bangalore: For the past few years, Indians returning back has been constantly on rise. Around 60,000 professionals settled in U.S. have returned to India in last year alone. Story


The talented and intellectual director Krish who gave us ‘Gamyam’ has arrived with yet another venture and this time on a larger scale.

Cable Raju (Allu Arjun) is in love with a rich girl (Deeksha) and he pretends to be a rich guy though he is from a slum and is a cable operator, Vivek (Manoj) wants to become a rockstar while his mother wants him to get into army, Saroja (Anushka) is a prostitute who decides to escape to Hyderabad for better business, Raheem (Manoj Bajpai) is a victim of misunderstanding as a terrorist, Nagaiah (Ramulu) is a victim of poverty and decides to donate his daughter in law’s kidney for the grandson’s education. What fate has in store for each form the rest of the story.

Allu Arjun has come up with a decent act and his role was a mix of comedy and seriousness. The character was etched very well and it is a message oriented one.

Manchu Manoj does hit bit with ease and though he plays a subdued character, he makes his presence felt. One fails to understand why his title credit has been given as ‘Guest appearance’ while he has done a full length role.

Anushka looks seductive and sensuous. However, it doesn’t live up to the hype that has been created. It is a different role for her and she did justice to it.

Manoj Bajpai is a powerhouse of talent but it must be said that his skills were hardly utilized. Telugu Movie Reviews

Ramulu was at ease in front of the camera and he made it look real.

Deeksha was luscious and appealing, Lekha was brief, Saranya was standard, Raghu Babu was regular, Satyam Rajesh gave few smiles. The actor doing the cop’s role was effective while the actor who did the role of ‘Karpuram’ made his presence felt.

Guest appearances of Brahmanandam, Posani and Krish are meaningful.

Good things about ‘Vedam’:

There is a message for ambitious youth if they wish to take..

* 'Never aim at something very far and do mischief to attain that. Listen to your conscience if you are doing wrong that time' (Allu Arjun- Nagayya episode)
* ‘Never assume that there are many people to help those are in needy, and you are not one among them. You too may need help and you may find a true helper from the man who you troubled’ (Sardarjee-Manoj episode)
* ‘Never brand anyone with religion’ (Manoj Bajpai-inspector episode)
* ‘Look at sex workers with different perspective. After all, prostitution is the oldest profession which is still continuing in every part of the world’ (Anushka-Karpooram episode)
* ‘Look at the poorest of the poor in the society those are getting their basic needs by selling their body parts’ (Nagayya episode)

Final Analysis:

The film arrives with a lot of expectations given the names associated with it. But, this is not a formula movie that entertains everyone. This movie is for sensible audiences who can melt their hearts for sensitive aspects of society.

It is basically a narration of various characters with different backdrops and challenges in life. While the depiction of that aspect is good, it is always essential to develop content on that. The makers have come up with a good attempt to portray the elements of good and evil.

Dialogues were impressive at few places, background score was impact creating and songs are also good both for eyes and ears. The real show stealer was the cinematography. Script was okay.

The storyline is routine but the difference is there are multiple characters and how they are brought together is the variety. While the first half and second half are engaging and different tracks are handled well, the climax loses momentum and gets a bit dragging. Someone with a caliber of Krish could have portrayed a different backdrop for it. On a whole, Krish proved to be a director with material in him.

The key is for the audience to connect to any one of the characters and that didn’t happen here. Overall, the film can be credited for the attempt to give a realistic outlook on life and the choices individuals make at a particular moment. Still, it could have been much impact creating if content was deep.

On a whole, the movie brings tears in a couple of scenes and Allu Arjun excelled in them. Manchu Manoj was stated to be in guest appearance, but he has a full length role. The message is ulterior but it is a sincere movie with idealistic idea portraying darker side of 5 lives.

Bottom Line: Except climax rest is heart touching

He also knows more about digital displays than just about anyone I know - and I know some pretty tech-savvy folks. This morning, Dr. Soneira shot me an interesting email regarding the so-called "Retina Display" of the iPhone 4. To clarify: a retina display is one whose resolution meets or exceeds the maximum resolution the human retina is capable of resolving, assuming perfect vision.
This is a bit tricky, since the eye doesn't have "pixels" and the resolution required to match the human eye's capability depends on the distance from your eye to the display. If you sit four feet away from a 50" 1080p television, you'll see pixels. If you sit 100 feet away, you won't. 2. So if you hold an iPhone at the typical 12 inches from your eyes, that works out to 477 pixels per inch. At 8 inches it's 716 ppi. You have to hold it out 18 inches before it falls to 318 ppi.

So the iPhone has significantly lower resolution than the retina. It actually needs a resolution significantly higher than the retina in order to deliver an image that appears perfect to the retina.


It's a great display, most likely the best mobile display in production (and I can't wait to test it) but this is another example of spec exaggeration.

So there you have it - some math from a display expert showing that, while the iPhone 4's display is certainly exciting and probably represents a step forward for smartphones, it may fall short of Apple's claims of meeting or exceeding the resolution of the human retina.

Now, Google AdWords comes to BP's aid

In yet another bid to manage the raging crisis in the Gulf of Mexico, oil major BP today said it had bought the “oil spill” search string in Google.com. So, the next time when an internet user types “oil spill” in Google.com, the first response in the search results will be a link directing to BP’s micro website that is dedicated to disseminating information on how it has handling the crisis on the ground . Buying of search strings is a product from the search-engine giant and is called Google AdWords.
A BP spokesperson here said this initiative was just to ensure that all stakeholders could easily find what the company was doing to overcome the oil spill crisis and also made it easy for affected parties to place their claims. “It is also for people to sign up as volunteers,” said a company spokesperson.

On April 20, BP’s semi-submersible exploratory offshore rig, Deepwater Horizon, in the Gulf of Mexico exploded and sank two days later, causing 11 deaths and spilling oil across the Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and Florida coasts. From an initial estimate of 1,000 barrels a day, the company later had to accept the US government estimate that it could be losing as much as 5,000 barrels of crude every day.
From an early estimate of $6-million loss a day, today BP’s loss clock is ticking at $22 million a day and overall cost, including cleaning efforts, financial compensation and material loss, is expected to be closer to $800 million, before it sees the end of this crisis.

Last Sunday, BP’s 53-year old CEO Tony Hayward appeared on BBC’s flagship political programme, The Andrew Marr Show, and gave his commitment that his company would ensure it leaves Gulf of Mexico exactly the way it was before the crisis. “We are going to stop the leak. We are going to clean up the oil (spill), we are going to remediate any environmental damage, and we are going to return the Gulf coast to the position it was prior to this event. That’s an absolute commitment and we will be there long after the media is gone, making good on our promises,” said Hayward.
The buying of a two-word search string in Google.com is only a small part of a massive crisis-management effort that BP has rolled out over the past few weeks. Since the first news of the oil spill came out in the third week of April, BP’s communication systems had metamorphosed into what seems like a giant living organism that attempts to address every question shot at it.
Apart from taking some help from Google.com, the BP website has undergone a complete facelift, with links to every possible aspect of the oil spill crisis. Several remotely-operated vehicles are used to provide real-time feed of the oil spill and attempts to cap the spill.
The BP spokesperson was unable to provide more details on how it was using its online communication team to quell the negative publicity the company has been subject to for the last several weeks. A Google spokesperson in the UK said: “Google AdWords allows companies, political candidates and advocacy groups to get their message in front of consumers who are searching for relevant information.”
However, buying of the search string in Google.com will have limited advantages. One, the first link the search offers will be BP-sponsored, but it will also say it is a sponsored-link, equivalent of an online advertisement. Apart from this link, the rest of the links that follow would be exactly as they are had BP not bought this search string. This means the information access to third parties outside the company or US government will be unfiltered and untampered.

New MCI board to reassess all previous clearances

NEW DELHI: The six-member governing body of Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided to reassess all permissions granted to 79 medical colleges by the earlier regime regarding recognition of the institutes, starting new courses or increasing seats in existing ones.

A special team of 43 assessors, chosen from seven top central government medical institutes -- many of whom are well-known professors -- has been put together to inspect these medical colleges, wanting to either start an MBBS course or having applied for re-recognition of their MBBS degree.

The permanent inspectors who till now did the job for MCI have stepped down.

The governing body has finalised guidelines for the assessors to carry out inspections of colleges. A baseline datasheet has also been sent to all medical colleges which will have to be filled by the colleges and sent to the governing body.

MCI, which was established 76 years ago, was dissolved last month and replaced by a six-member panel after the CBI on April 22 arrested the then MCI president Dr Ketan Desai for taking a bribe of Rs 2 crore to grant recognition to a medical college in Punjab though it did not meet MCI standards.

The new governing panel is headed by Dr S K Sarin and includes Prof Ranjit Roy Chowdhary, Dr Sita Naik, Dr Gautam Sen, Dr Devi Shetty and Dr R L Salhan.

The new governing body has been authorised by the health ministry to both inspect and garnt recognition to medical colleges for the next one year under Section 10A of the MCI Act 1956.

Till now, it was the sole duty of MCI to inspect medical colleges for adequate infrastructure, equipment and faculty. Based on this inspection report, MCI recommended to the ministry whether to grant the college recognition or not.

But for the next year, the ministry will not be responsible for recognising colleges. It will be the sole responsibility of the six-member panel to both inspect and recognise all new medical colleges or old ones wanting re-recognition.

Dr Sarin said, "We will finish our task of assessing, approving or disapproving of new colleges and renewal of permission for colleges already approved for undergraduate courses well before the July 15 deadline. The same time will also be needed to go through all applications for the 14,897 postgraduate seats."

He added, "The 43 assessors were randomly chosen and through computer generated random numbering assigned the duty of inspecting colleges. They will submit their assessment reports by June 16. We will then evaluate individual files before reaching our decision."

Earlier, health secretary K Sujatha Rao said, "This committee is not in an advisory role but will actively look to run MCI, including issuing licences and permissions, conducting inspections and regulating medical education, for a maximum of one year. They will also suggest how to reform MCI which will help in preparing the bill which we plan to introduce in the monsoon session of Parliament."

Meanwhile, health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has asked the new board of governors to ensure transparency in the process of granting recognition to medical colleges and to be beware of touts. He wrote to Dr Sarin recently, "The decisions to be taken by the board of governors should be free, fair and without fear."

Friends who attended a film award event at Colombo with the Dutts spilled the beans reports Mumbai Mirror. Dutt who married Maanyata three years ago had expressed his desire to become father again in various press interviews. His close friends also knew about his ardent desire for a child.
Though the Dutts don’t have a particular preference about having a son or a daughter, buzz is that Sanjay is hoping it’s a boy since he already has a daughter, Trishala.
